Strongyloidiasis (Strongyloides Infection)

November 18, 2020

Strongyloidiasis is a disease caused by a nematode, or a roundworm, in the genus Strongyloides. Though there are over 40 species within this genus that can infect birds, reptiles, amphibians, livestock and other primates, Strongyloides stercoralis is the primary species that accounts for human disease. It sometimes infects primates, dogs and cats, and some dog and primate infecting strains have been shown to be capable of causing human infection. We do not know if cat-infecting strains can infect humans or not. The larvae are small; the longest reach about 600 µm in length—making them very difficult to see with the naked eye.

Symptoms

The majority of people infected with Strongyloides do not have symptoms. Those who do develop symptoms often have non-specific, or generalized complaints. Some people develop abdominal pain, bloating, heartburn, intermittent episodes of diarrhea and constipation, a dry cough, and skin rashes. Rarely people will develop arthritis, kidney problems, and heart conditions (www.cdc.gov).

Prevention

The best way to prevent Strongyloides infection is to wear shoes when you are walking on soil, avoid contact with fecal matter or sewage, and clean up after dogs. Proper sewage disposal and fecal management are keys to prevention.

Treatment

Treatment for strongyloidiasis is recommended for all persons found to be infected, whether symptomatic or not, due to the risk of developing hyperinfection syndrome and/or disseminated strongyloidiasis. Furthermore, it is recommended that patients be considered for testing prior to being initiated on any immunosuppressive therapy, particularly corticosteroids.

Here is a list of some of the most effective natural remedies to treat parasite infections:

Garlic: Allicin, the active ingredient in garlic, has been shown to have numerous antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-parasitic qualities. Adding garlic to your meals, or more concentrated garlic powder, can quickly help treat hookworms, roundworms and tapeworms, as well as any other parasites in the body. Garlic should be easily accessible in most places around the world (cabdirect.org).

Thyme: an effective home remedy for many afflictions, and the powerful active ingredients in thyme (including thymol) have proven anti-parasitic properties. The herb is also safe to eat for animals and is widely available in many parts of the world(Journal of Herbal Pharmacotherapy).
